Don’t Fly Globespan

Posted by Steven McCarron at 2:42 pm

In relation to this No Flyglobespan post, where I previously expressed my annoyance at being mucked around by the airline Globespan (”voted airline of the year” - possibly by themselves) following my second flight cancellation, I just wanted to moan some more.

It seems airlines are entitled to cancel flights at their will, and new EU laws only really offer loose protection for cancellations and delays within a 14 day period of the flight. So what if an airline cancels a flight 15 days before it’s due to leave and you’ve booked hotels or connections etc? I could see Globespan doing so, seeing as it looks like they only book a suitable runway spot once they know they’ve sold enough seats.

Anyway, my latest annoyance is that although I was entitled to a refund for my cancelled flight within 7 days of it happening, from the point of me asking to actually receiving my money took 22 days. So despite money going from my account instantly when I buy something, the system doesn’t work so well in reverse.

Secondly I’ve lost almost £5 due to the currency conversion. Five pounds doesn’t sound like enough to get properly annoyed about, but this comes down to the principle. Not only did Globespan get to keep my money for 42 days and earn interest on it, they also get to profit from exchange rates, all for supplying nothing but hassle and stress.

And finally, as some more evidence that I’m not the only person being mucked around, they also recently moved my parents’ upcoming flights from a 9am departure to 6am, backing up my theory that they really don’t book a runway slot until they find the cheapest deal. It’s not that my parents care a great deal. They’re just happy to be going on holiday, but it’s not going to be great fun getting my 78-year-old grandmother to the airport for 4am to check in.

Sorry Globespan, but I have absolutely no faith left in you.

And as an apology for all my airline talk, visit http://www.climatecare.org and ease any guilt for flying too much.

  1. I am also somewhat annoyed. Earlier this year I booked a return from Glasgow to Amsterdam, (the short time period was important). A few days before departure I was informed the flight had been cancelled. There was no viable alternative and I had to miss the visit.
In May I booked (through an agent) twelve returns Glasgow/Toronto for the end of August. I paid for extra leg room for two of us (both over six feet).
On the return flight my partner was allocated and extra room seat, I was allocated a normal one. I spoke to the glight attendants who virtually said that was my bad luck. My knees would not fit into the space, I had to put one foot in the aisle, sitting twisted. Later, I was given a seat near the rear of the aircraft with fractionally more space, but I had to sit bolt upright, unable to rest my head or stretch my lega for a six and a half hour night flight. (I was also now at the opposite end of the aircraft to my travelling companions (as organiser) unable to liasse with them.
It has taken over a momth for Globespan to reply, (but not to me, the reply reference was for some other passenger). I have phoned today. They say my extra charge is being refunded—-but paying it does not guarantee you will get what you pay for. I would term it ‘misselling’. As to my overnight discomfort, they are not in the least interested. Customer service and care—–pah!
It was particularly galling to be aware that the seat next to my friend was occupied by someone only about five feet tall, who I presume must have had a most comfortable voyage and sleep for six and a half hours.
I wonder how long it will take for MY refund to arrive?

  5. Have just received an email from Globespan. We originally booked flights to Florida for 10 sept and 19 sept but these flights have been changed twice and our new flight dates are 12 sept to 17 sept. They’ve just reduced my holiday from 10 days to 5! When I phoned the number they gave to cancel it was unobtainable. God knows if I’ll ever get my money back. DIABOLICIAL DO NOT FLY GLOBESPAN

  7. Was considering flying GlobeSpan, flying out in December and returning in January (2008) to Boston, but reading the reviews about how I may get fucked around, I don’t think I’ll bother.

They only put fucking flight details up for the next 4 months or so, their winter flights haven’t even appeared yet.

  24. I share your pain. I recently booked a city break to Barcelona for August, and flyglobespan have since changed our flight times so drastically that it’s reduced our short stay from four days to two! I don’t know what to do as doubt very much they will offer our money back. It seems the only option is to either cancel the flights for a fee (we’d get a mere £30 of the original costs back) or go for the two days. So annoying! If you have any advice, it would be great to hear from you.

  25. Booked globespan in September for return honeymoon flights, 12:00 departure Lanzarote to Edinburgh. 4 weeks before the wedding globespan inform us we are now on a flight leaving Lanzarote at 22:00 getting to Glasgow at 04:00 on the Monday morning. Bride’s a teacher and can’t get the day off. Globespan’s best idea was to suggest we change our honeymoon destination and they would swap our flights for us!

Lesson learned- book with reputable airline next time.

  26. Cancelled flight back as did not have slot, did not phone us in Spain, just waited till arrived as airport with 9 hour wait. Lost baggage for 5 days - number to call for luggage just rung out 24-7. Recently lost a licence over safety concerns.

Terms and conditions effectively state can cancel or amend as and when want for no compensation.

Finally, “low cost”? £280 return to Malaga low cost?
    Never fly Globespan.
