When it comes to Idlewild, I’ve pretty much been there all the way with them. From gigs in Nice n Sleazy in Glasgow circa ‘97 and ‘98, up through Barrowlands, to huge outdoors performances at Glastonbury, Edinburgh and other festivals. I’ve possibly seen them live more times than any other band. The stat is ruined a bit considering I haven’t seen them in more than four years (not helped by them not visiting Holland properly), but I reckon I’ve caught at least 16 sets by them because we were always on the same path. Well, Idlewild are semi-relevant right now because singer Roddy Woomble releases a solo album this week, and as with most solo albums, it’s a bit more ‘experimental’ and personal.
Of course, Idlewild have been on calmer drugs in recent years anyway. Back in the old days, they were a blur of drunken fear, drenched in feedback, rolling around the floor, and hugely fun for it. It was hard not to get wrapped up in the buzz of it all. They were even being pegged as Scotland’s answer to Nirvana every so briefly. Over their albums, however, they’ve become increasingly dependent on melody over chaos, embracing guitar arpeggios more fitting of REM. It’s never put me off. In fact, because I’m in a similar age group, my own musical mellowing has matched that of the band, so it’s worked out fine for me, although undoubtedly many of the younger fans were firmly against the inclusion of acoustic works etc.
And now there’s this solo album, titled My Secret Is My Silence. It’s interesting. I’ve only listened to it once at this stage, so I’m not too wrapped up in it yet, but it’s worth checking out. In parts it doesn’t stray too far from the softer spots of more recent Idlewild material found in Warnings/Promises, but overall it falls into the folk and folk-rock brackets, making use of melodic (or dour) Scottish duets and even fiery fiddle playing at times.
Looking back to 1998, I could never imagine myself sitting listening to a ‘Roddy does folk’ album. He was less of a singer back then, and more a painfully shy screamer. But a lot changes in eight years. Anyway, as a comparison, I offer two Idlewild classics from their debut mini-album Captain and one of the new tracks.

thanks- i too enjoy the mellower Milderwild as they’ve been called and am patiently waiting for my shop in the US to get ROddy’s import. and thanks for the Captain stuff - that release is hard to come by here in the States.
