Mercury Tilt Switch / The A Forest

Dialogue 4 from the Too Many Fireworks series is a 7” without much in the way of inner balance, but that in turn is part of its greatest appeal. In one hand it offers you Dundee’s Mercury Tilt Switch who play with an obvious sense of urgency. In fact ‘Get Ready for the Trench Run’ is like the second before a car crash. Filled with chaos and desperation, it’s a furious rollercoaster ride. The guitars are angular and biting, and the battering of the drums leaves no breathing space for you to relax. Sure, they fit in easily with bands like Biffy Clyro and 100 Reasons, but the lack of a unique sound doesn’t prevent this track from sounding both exciting and polished.

Alternatively there is The A Forest with ‘Dans L'aide Du Lévrier Retraité’, which is poles apart from MTS. Gone is the fury, replaced by beautifully relaxing sounds that bewitch and hypnotize you. As it fades in, you could be forgiven for thinking it was Yo La Tengo in one of their recent quiet moods thanks to those synths. At least until the almost ethereal female vocal enters and sweeps the song up to another level of your imagination. It’s simply a magnificent soundscape, and it feels like a long time since a band from Scotland has created something so lovely in this genre. It was even tempting to break out a Cocteau Twins comparison, but I’ll leave The A Forest with something more to work towards.

Will fans of MTS appreciate this or vice versa? Some will, some may not, but it’s definitely worth exploring to find out.
