Sykosonics
Blanks EP
Silent Minority

Sykosonics, a trio from Amsterdam provide an interesting introduction to their music on latest release, Blanks. The female-fronted act set about providing some energetic pop/rock without ever going overboard and losing themselves amidst scathing guitars, and that is completely fine because opening track ‘Ultralite’ alone manages to highlight their greatest strength - creating great vocal melodies reminiscent of Liz Phair (pre-2003) or Carol van Dyke (Bettie Serveert), that have you humming along when you’re listening, or else looping in your head when you aren’t. It’s not all about one song, though. ‘Ray’ also has some lovely harmonies, recreating briefly the classic feel of The Lemonheads. ‘Overload’ and ‘Blanks’ then both show an understated side of the band, but their success still hinges on the careful vocal parts that contain so much potential for the future.
