Alina Simone
I’d never heard of Alina Simone before this morning. Strange then that within seconds of pushing play I’m taken back to a period three or four years ago. Mix tapes, buses, mountains…maybe it’s just the combination of her sparse arrangements, emotive vocals and low autumn sun gleaming through the window that is sparking memories deep in my mind.
Either way, this is pretty and interesting. Also the first time in ages I’ve clicked on a random MP3 file that made me stop and want to hear more. Perhaps it’s not perfect. It’s certainly very raw, but I like that about it. Flitting between Cat Power and Sleater Kinney influences, there’s even little hints of Lisa Papineau in her voice, which can never be a bad thing. Overall, all three songs available on her website leave me feeling pretty content right now. Fighting an unsigned battle, her current CD Prettier in the Dark is available on CDBaby.
