Amanda Rogers

There are two easy comparisons to make about Amanda Rogers – sounds like Tori Amos or Fiona Apple.

Thing is, if you read that and listen closely to the music then it’s quite definitely wrong. Yes, there is a girl – quite a young one at that – and a piano. But there’s a lot made of Amanda Rogers’ punk and indie-rock background. That’s where she does her thing, confusing the mosh-hungry kids with her uncompromisingly honest and simple songs.

Despite the basic formula of piano and vocals, on her debut album The Places You Dwell, her voice hides muffled behind her slow piano compositions. Thankfully on the newly released Daily News, she seems to have gotten past this…shyness? No, it can’t be shyness if she’s stepping out in front of punk audiences with just a keyboard. Anyway, it’s emboldened and clearer, and treading warily on the right side of interesting.

Discovered completely by coincidence, Rogers will actually be playing in the Netherlands at Hoogeveen on December 4 and Haarlem on December 5 (2004 if you’re reading this in the future).
