Carla Bozulich

It’s true that I discovered The Geraldine Fibbers way too late. But one night a couple of months ago I slipped an unknown MP3 into one of the Broadcast Stayfun playlists and it completely blew me away. It was a song from Lost Somewhere Between the Earth and My Home, and had loud guitars, great melodies, but also one of the most vicious female vocal takes I’d heard since 7 Year Bitch.

And even though that started something inside me, I still didn’t quite get the Carla Bozulich solo stuff. Her recent Red Headed Stranger album was an interesting concept, though, covering Willie Nelson’s famous country album in entirety, but even then, it didn’t quite break my surface.

Then I heard this song today and it clicked. ‘Can I Sleep In Your Arms’ is the second track from the EP/mini-album I’m Gonna Stop Killing, featuring two songs from the previous album as well as a bunch of live stuff. It’s actually a duet with Nelson himself, and as a visit into real country music it’s quite beautiful, gentle, lulling, and emotional. It may be far from the fury of the ‘Fibbers, but it’s well worth the download.
