Cass McCombs makes a visit to the Netherlands in March 2004 in support of The Mountain Goats. Despite being licensed to 4AD in Europe from Monitor Records, his profile is still relatively small here, and so far, the coming of his album, A, has been quite a low-key affair, although, this may change with the official release on March 1, and the following tour.
What to expect, though? Well Cass doesn’t sound like the traditional singer/songwriter ploughing away with his acoustic guitar. There is very much a band sound despite the solo moniker, and you can also expect more of an emotional croon than heartbroken pleas or angst-ridden wails.
As yet, 4AD haven’t made available a sample MP3 for A, opting instead for the streaming files. However, Monitor do present samples, so I’ve chosen to link to a song called ‘Not the Way’ which was recorded live a while ago when Cass used to tour with The Oxes as his backing band.
