Seeing Trees, the debut album from Edinburgh’s Colin Kerr is about as DIY as it gets. Recorded primarily at home like Amsterdam’s own Frostparade, the results are surprisingly polished. Sure, drum machines don’t quite have that same snap as the real thing, but beyond that, the album contains some very intriguing guitar parts in particular, which enables it to sound nothing like a typical solo album.
‘Red Floor’ from the album is available free from the artist’s site and is a good example of what to expect. Containing a distant ’80s mood that references classic acts like New Order, the guitar style is very dynamic and full of great parts that a band like Idlewild would be keen to reproduce but are suddenly struggling with. The dense Scottish vocals also reflect the almost bleak environment and atmosphere, yet it’s a completely absorbing track that really dominates your thoughts.
