Deerpark

Deerpark are an acoustic-based group from Leeds in England, but rather than settling as traditional folk or even alt. country, their music is immersed in layers of instrumentation such as harmonium, bouzouki, violin, piano, banjo, flute, trumpet, and glockenspiel, to offer a full spectrum of unique orchestrations.

Amongst others, they list their key influences as The Dirty Three, Empress, Herman Dune, and Alasdair Roberts, and yeah, you can hear elements of that in the music. The diversity of members and instruments, though, means that at the very core is a simple song, which evolves rapidly into a mixed soundscape, distorting the basic journey into something more complex and interesting.

Their debut EP It Made Her Look Spidery is available now, and there are a couple of samples available on their website. However, instead I’m recommending the internet exclusive track ‘…On a Sunday Night’. It is perhaps not as smooth and careful as the CD tracks but it typifies their songwriting capabilities, captures the sound...oh, and it demonstrates their great ability to not sound American in the slightest.
