Hurka's Hero

I’ve heard quite a few Hurka’s Hero MP3’s over the past couple of years and every time I’ve been left amazed at how much the performance and songwriting of Gus Hernandez has been improving. So much so, that’s he one of the few artists playing live around L.A. that I’m always happy to listen to. Not that he emails me and begs like all the other bands from there at least.

My favourite song until now has always been ‘XYZ:why?’ (which is also available on his website), with some great riffs played on the acoustic guitar. It reminds me of The Spells, just because of the clash between a slight acoustic Sleater-Kinney style and a Mary Timony influence.

His recent EP, Pacifico offers up the slower, ‘Noisy Jogger’, which grows in intensity as it passes. This time with just the acoustic guitar and Gus’ voice central to attention, the vibe is very different, and the sound from the guitar is reminiscent of Kristin Hersh’s style on Hips and Makers or Strange Angels.
