Portland’s Invisible have already spent some time touring the west coast of America, especially the north-western regions of Oregon and Washington, wowing audiences with their video presentations along with their music. As well as sharing a relative proximity with Seattle’s sound manipulators, The Swords Project and their small orchestra, aurally they have much in common too, although Invisible are a mere quartet in comparison.
Musically, they produce semi-instrumental post-rock passages performed traditionally with guitars, drums, etc, but with large doses of violin as well as electronic programming mixed in. Yet the result isn’t a mash of digitally distorted beats backing the guitars. Instead, there is a definite attempt to weave organic layers of sound and to produce natural sounding recordings using as many creative tools as they have available.
It may be some time before the live multimedia extravaganza of Invisible ever reaches Europe, but there are still lots of creative videos and audio samples available from their website, and the track I have chosen to highlight is ‘Verdict Swings’ from the Invisible EP, which showcases perfectly their balance of organic and electronic sounds, also with the inclusion of vocals this time.
