Lapsus Linguae

Lapsus Linguae have impressed a lot of Scottish audiences over the past few years, even when they were threatening anyone who dared to applaud at the end of a song. So much so that in January 2002 they released the six song album You Got Me Fraiche on Fierce Panda, and ever since they’ve dragged themselves all across Britain supporting bands and just playing live as often as possible in order for their classical-art-noise-rock to be heard.

Weirdly, winter 2004 is the quietest Lapsus have been since 2000 but for some good reasons. Firstly they’ve started work on their new album which they hope to release before summer. Secondly, they’re foolish enough to start their own record label, so be prepared for some weird noise seeing the light of day thanks to these guys. And with this all combining to eventually produce a European tour later in the year, just now is either a good time to discover a bit about the band or just an opportunity not to forget about them.

My favourite Lapsus song has always been ‘Parade (and that’s an order)’ which is available from their website and should be downloaded immediately. However, ‘Are We Really Dancing’ is the closing track from their album and is the perfect introduction to the band, capturing the beauty they can produce before it all turns schizophrenic, and they stamp and kick it until the song is a bloody pulp lying on the floor. But when they aren’t wrestling each other or trying to intimidate, they are as captivating as can be, and if you don’t take notice now, you’re simply wasting your time.
