Maxton Grainger

After years of playing as Eska and also finally getting some Europe-wide appreciation as James Orr Complex, Chris Mack has been working back in Scotland with another band of Scottish muso’s. So what can you expect from Maxton Grainger? Lots of intricate riffs as with J.O.C., less distortion than Eska, and much more twists than both combined. Think Fugazi from End Hits to present. So far they’ve released one 4-track 7” special edition on Kabukikore, and one MP3 from that has been released online.

‘Missing Poussin’ shares a lot in common with being lost in a foreign city. There is the exhilaration of everything being new and exciting, yet the nervous confusion of your senses being completely overwhelmed and not knowing what the next turn is going to bring. Of course, this analogy goes right out the window if you’re a skittish traveller refusing to leave the street your hotel is on, but think of it as an ideal world if you must. The song chops and changes unpredictably, guitars cutting out abruptly, a bass taking over, and a completely new rhythm starting up. The one flaw here is that it’s too damn short. However, with just no hint at what is ever coming next, it makes for compulsive listening over and over.
