The Microphones

After what has been a pretty regular flow of albums from The Microphones, last year’s release Mount Eerie served K Records and the artist pretty well. Also, I never saw one bad live review from their/his touring last year.

Well 2004 is kicking off with a live album with the subtle title, Live in Japan, February 19th, 21st, and 22nd, 2003, which is due for release on February 3. As a taster, the lead-off track from the album, ‘Great Ghosts’ has been made available in MP3 format and makes for a good selling point.

My initial reaction was that it sounds slightly reminiscent of an acoustic Scout Niblett, which may seem quite strange considering he’s an American male so is quite lacking of a Nottingham accent. However, it’s just something contained in the phrasing and tone of the voice that sends off that signal in my brain. Being live too, it’s a very open sound; just acoustic guitar and vocal, and it sounds really nice like that. Overall, a great introduction to the album.

A selection of older samples is also available via the K Records website.
