Mrs Pilgrimm
Mrs Pilgrimm was only ever on my mind for a very short period a few years ago, so it’s no real surprise that I mainly forgot she existed. I had caught her live in Haarlem with Lou Barlow as part of the Four Tenors concert, which unfortunately I don’t have reviewed anywhere. It was a strange experience with lots of weirdness and occasional moments of wonder. Of course I was there mainly for Barlow, but aside from him Mrs Pilgrimm was my other favourite.
She’s a cellist by trade, but not your typical “apparently stiff classical musician who gets slaughtered as soon as the performance closes.” No, Mrs Pilgrimm is probably happier to get slaughtered before her concerts, manipulating her cello in more ways than anyone is ever allowed. She plucks, she bows, and she’s rampant with loops and effects. A lot of the time you’d really never know that it is a cello you hear.
So in tribute to the fact I just rediscovered her accidentally this week, I wanted to link to one of the tracks from her most recent album Alone Queen.
