Since the end of Pavement, Scott Kannberg seems to have landed fully on his feet and kept a steady grip on things whilst Stephen Malkmus, who shot ahead originally, last year fell into a ditch after releasing Pig Lib. That’s fine, though, because all that matters currently is the new Preston School of Industry album Monsoon is ready for release and all signs point to it being a strong, solid album.
To date, Matador has released two MP3s in preparation for this, my favourite being ‘Caught in the Rain’. Rather than the jauntiness of Pavement, the music has been run through an alt-country grinder, and the song comes out the other end happier for it, leaving a delightful little tune with familiar sounding riffs and gentle slide guitars ringing in the distance.
