In August 2003, Pretty Girls Make Graves released the album The New Romance and in the process became a big musical crush for me at the time, especially in the absence of bands like Sleater-Kinney. Revisiting the album a year on, it still stands up pretty well. ‘Something Bigger, Something Brighter’ is still the stand out track, but in terms of jagged rock with girl-boy vocals, it’s a pretty pleasing album throughout.
The main promotional MP3 for the album still remains as ‘All Medicated Geniuses’, circulating on a pounding bass-line and twisty guitar riffs. It’s a vitriolic call to arms much like the rest of the album, and well worth trying out. In fact it, it may still fill that original hole in the market pretty well.
